Pulitzer Prize winning drama about a cancer struck Professor of English

Why See Wit?

Plays

North carolina Theatre Production

Written by Margaret Edson, Wit is a stunningly intelligent and penetrating piece of theatre, which was awarded the the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1999. The play takes place over the final hours of Dr Vivian Bearing, a professor of English who is dying from ovarian cancer. An expert in the life-and-death themes of the poet John Donne, Vivian now finds herself subject to rather impersonal medical scrutiny, and she begins to question the importance she's placed in intellectualism over simple humanity throughout the course of her life.

Wit premiered Off-Broadway in 1998, and was adapted into an acclaimed HBO movie three years later, with Emma Thompson in the lead role.
