Including opera's most beloved duets
Lifelong friendship is tested to its very limits in Bizet's melodious work The Pearl Fishers presented by the North Carolina Opera this spring. Allow yourself to be transported to the rich world of ancient Ceylon (Sri Lanka) where two fishermen reunite after a long time apart eager to make up for lost time. But history threatens to repeat itself when the very reason they split comes rushing back into their lives, spelling disaster.
Premiering in 1863 The Pearl Fishers found little favor amongst the critics of the day and was never repeated in Bizets lifetime but found a new life in the 20th century, joining the repertoire the world over. Telling the tale of two fishermen, Zurga and Nadir and their battle for the love of the same woman, its themes of friendship, envy and betrayal continue to resonate with audiences.
